Welcome to BiasBars - Aluminum Bias Bar Sets & Celtic Quilting Books

Bias Bars were introduced to the quilting world by the Celtic Design Company in 1980. These metal (aluminum) Bias Bars are ideal for making perfect bias strips. They are also well suited for making stems of flowers, stained glass work and swag borders. Aluminum is a far superior product over plastic as they will last much much longer.

Our selection of Celtic Quilting Books demonstrate how three ancient Celtic art forms (Interlace, Floral Motifs, and Spirals) have been adapted for quilting. Any one of these quilting books will help you gain a better understanding of distinctive Celtic designs with a diverse variety of patterns. A mix of ancient and modern Celtic patterns is provided.

Overview

Celtic Quilt Designs II; The Children of Lir is a collection of elegant interlace designs drawn from ancient art forms by internationally acclaimed author and quilt designer Philomena Durcan, who explores the current revival of Celtic art and culture through the art of quiltmaking. The Celtic passion for minute work and great elaboration has produced art which has been celebrated throughout the ages as "the work of angels and not of man." Continuing in that tradition, Philomena has produced quilt designs that inspire.

Her design are presented in the colorful context of Irish history and legend. The magical story of the children of Lir, who were turned into swans by a wicked stepmother, has enchanted young and old for centuries. The quilter will discover 24 block designs steeped in this Celtic heritage. The complex designs are achieved through step-by-step, easy-to-follow instructions using the bias bar technique. Philomena also shares her sense of color and fabric selection for the creation of stunning quilts.

Overview

A Celtic Garden is a continuation of my fascination with Celtic design. However, the inspiration for this book did not come from medieval manuscripts and Gaelic architecture like my other books. Rather it came from the gorgeous gardens of Ireland and Scotland, and the carpets of flowers strewn with breathtaking abandon across the Celtic countrysides.

In preparing for this book, I researched a number of flower art forms from the past, particularly those derived from Celtic Art. I myself explored many possible ways to develop flower designs that captured the essence of the Celtic gardens. I decided to keep the flower patterns simple, and let bias layering and use of color and fabric add depth, texture, and richness to the finished designs.

The bulk of the book is made up of the Celtic Floral Designs themselves. There are thirteen different designs in all with complete cutting and appliqueing instructions, as well as pull-out design for the Through the Garden Gate wall hanging.

Overview

Celtic Spirals is a quilt design book which offers twenty original Celtic Spiral Quilt Design Patterns. Both simple and complex designs are included, and there is a variety of sizes from which to choose. It is not necessary to complete a full quilt to enjoy working with the designs. One of them alone makes a beautiful wall hanging or can be used to decorate handmade clothing; whereas, some or all of them can be worked into any number of gorgeous quilt designs. Use your imagination. Experiment with form, color, and size; and above all experience the joy of applying your own creative expression in your use of my designs.

Center your project around something that pleases you and motivates you to move ahead, such as design, a color scheme, a special person to make the project for, or a decoration for a room. It takes time and patience to do anything worth while, so it is important to think about your project and plan it out. Will the colors you have chosen fit into your decor? Is the size appropriate? Is the design balanced and appealing to the eye? These are the kinds of questions you need to ask yourself.
